Itinerary

1 Alamosa
Check into your Alamosa hotel (Holiday Inn Express or similar) any time after 4 pm. Alamosa is the San Luis Valley's cultural center with many shops, activities and spectacular backdrop of rugged alpine peaks. While you are in the area, the Great Sand Dunes is a must.  Overnight in Alamosa.

2 Alamosa to La Veta and return
Ride the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad over La Veta Pass, the highest point which any active standard gauge rail line crosses the Rockies in Colorado. You will stop for 2 hours to soak in the beauty of La Veta and its artistic inspirations. Return to Alamosa for another night.

3 Alamosa to Chama, New Mexico
Check out of your Alamosa hotel and drive to Chama today, passing by some terrific lakes, maybe stop by the El Vado Lodge for lunch. Check into your Chama hotel (The Branding Iron or similar) after 3 PM. Chama is New Mexico’s hidden treasure with outstanding beauty all around and many outdoor activities. The evening is yours to explore great places like Heron Lake, maybe take in some fishing.  Overnight in Chama.

3 Chama to Osier and return
This morning board the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad, the longest and highest narrow gauge track around. This is a 6 hour excursion with a one hour lunch stop in Osier (lunch is included). Wildlife abounds on this exploration back in time and is not uncommon to hear the whistle blowing to move animals away from the tracks. Lacking nothing, this rail trip is one of the 20 best rail experiences in the world- The Society of International Railway Travelers Overnight in Chama.

3 Chama
Our tour comes to a close when you checkout of your Chama hotel by 11AM.
