Trip Information

Washington Steam Extravaganza
Join us for a chance to take an exciting journey back in time!

There is no comparison to a day-long rail adventure with the sights and sounds of steam railroading as it used to be. We invite you to slow down for a moment and become a part of the history and magic of old style railroading. Don’t forget though, one of the best parts of this special day will be the many photo run-bys and lots of steam!

Start your day with a scenic drive to Chehalis, Washington where you connect with the Chehalis Centralia Railroad located at a restored Milwaukie Railroad Train Depot. You will have the unique experience of watching the #15, a 1918 Baldwin 90-ton 2-8-2S steam engine, hook-up freight cars and begin its way out of the station. Have your camera ready for our first great photo opportunity. A few minutes later the train will return to the depot, unhook the freight cars, add 2 former UP cabooses and two outdoor cars and off we’ll go!

The Chehalis Steam Train operates over a nine mile section of track that extends southwest from Chehalis. This historic rail line was previously operated by the Milwaukie Road and later the Chehalis Western Railroad. The line winds through scenic hills and farmland, along the Chehalis River and over several wooden trestles. As the Baldwin steams along we’ll be stopping to provide for some fun photo run-bys.

After playing and relaxing for 2 ½ hours we will make our way back to Chehalis, deboard, and head for the next stop on our day-long steam extravaganza.

During your 90 minute drive to Yacolt, Washington be sure to take the time to stop for lunch along the way, as the next train will depart promptly upon our arrival.

Your next stop is the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad. This railroad was established with the help of a group of community volunteers that wanted to restore a functioning historical railroad to an historic line. The long-term goal is to ultimately restore the line to Battle Ground, which is being supported by funds from Clark County.

On this trip, however, we will be departing from Yacolt pulled by a recently restored 1929 ALCO 2-8-2T steam locomotive and riding to the Lewis River valley. This is the maiden voyage year for this locomotive and it photographs beautifully pulling vintage passenger coaches, an open air flatcar, and caboose. Along the way we will have a number of photo run-bys as we travel through a 300 foot rock tunnel and cross the Lewis River. At one point Moulton Falls will be visible from a cliff top vantage point. There is a chance to stretch your legs at Moulton Falls County Park before we start our return. Stop and listen to hear the whistle and sounds of the steam locomotive working as it climbs up the grade back to Yacolt.

Be sure not to miss this unique opportunity for a day of Steam in the Pacific Northwest. Seats are very limited. Go to our website or call us today.

We look forward to seeing you onboard!
